Today saw the release of one of the coolest songs I’ve heard in a while, one with a name that perfectly encapsulates the coolness inside. Yes, “Lounge Lizard” by Molly Lewis totally captured my heart from the very beginning, so much so that I spent the whole day telling everyone I knew about this tune while simultaneously thinking about it at every spare moment.
The thing that really catches my ear in this song (and I suppose with Molly Lewis in particular), is that it’s fully whistled through. Yes, you read that right. There is not one word uttered in the entire song, and yet Lewis’s gorgeous, spot-on whistle portrays emotion that goes deeper than many words can even dream of going. “Lounge Lizard” is akin to becoming entranced by a particularly melodic UFO, one that comes in peace but has mysterious intentions. It’s a tune that wraps you up in a comfortingly floating style, but has a certain squint-your-eyes kind of uneasiness to it that keeps the listener engaged throughout.
“Lounge Lizard” is a song perfect for daydreaming, with no words to interrupt your thoughts as you drift to other worlds. At the song’s ending, I found myself feeling a sense of melancholic loss riddled with reluctant acceptance, an emotion that to me signifies that a tune is super special and not one to miss out on. “Lounge Lizard” is a song that transcends language and appeals to everyone in a beautifully elegant yet accessible way, and for that, Molly Lewis has solidified herself as stellar in my book!
