I’ve always had a soft spot for songs that mix genres, particularly the ones that bring polar opposite sounds together. It’s always cool to see what can be done, how unique bands to get. Room De Dark take this in stride, bending smooth bossa nova and heavy garage rock to their will in “Sonha”.
Unlike some other songs that employ a combination, “Sonha” debuts the mix from the beginning — a heavy electric buzz that hangs over a beat punctuated by sharp drum taps and a steady, grooving bassline. The vocals are biting, sing-song tone gentle but angry, as if the words were squeezed out through gritted teeth. A terrific crescendo leads into each chorus, a quick buildup that has great reward. The sound is desperate, clawing its way through each note with a need that motivates every passing beat.
“Sonha” is a tune that can appeal to all, with a sound that can match the affinities of any listener. It’s jagged in all the right places, rough and tumbling and all teeth! Yet at the same time it has this mischievous, smirking sound that makes it irresistible, fun to listen to over and over again.
