While I am always on the lookout for new bands to cover here on Ear Bites, there’s a couple that I’m set on talking about as soon as they release something. The Knee-Hi’s are one of these, with my heart skipping a beat every time they announce a new tune! Their newest one, “Social Suicide” is a great display of how perfectly they have their formula down — glitteringly bright elements mixing with a dark grit to create a track that is absolutely irresistible!
While the tempo is upbeat, there’s a low calm that overtakes the song for a nice contrast. The bass and guitar are relentless, a synchronized strum that always hits the mark. I’ve always loved the vocals from the Knee-Hi’s, and I think this one really shows them off. There’s a versatility, a smooth desperation combining with a gritty snarl to create this addicting tone reminiscent of legends like Joan Jett and Suzi Quatro. As great as I think this song is on recording, I can just tell it’ll absolutely kill live, especially with the terrific presence they deliver onstage when they perform.
With “Social Suicide”, it’s clear that the Knee-Hi’s know exactly what they’re doing, and are doing it exactly the way they want to. Every release matches the last and yet differentiates itself in a subtle way, leaving the listener guessing what’s next. While I can’t answer that, what I can say is that I believe whatever is next for the Knee-Hi’s is bound to be nothing short of stellar.
