While I love living in a place I can walk everywhere, I gotta say that I miss driving. There’s nothing better than a long drive on a cloudy afternoon, where trees line the streets and even though every light seems to be red, it feels weirdly okay. Some of my favorite moments this summer were spent on my short ride home from work late at night, when I would take the longer way around just to listen to one more song. While I’ve been listening to a lot of new music lately, I don’t think any tune has made me want to take a late-night drive more than The Novelas’ track “Wanna Leave The Party”.
Maybe part of this is the single cover, but I think the feel of the song lends to it as well. It’s calm and steady while also having a beat that keeps it upright, driving it forward. (No pun intended!) I like the way it begins, with the drums waking you up for the nicely layered strings that come in next. The faraway, muffled sound of the lead guitar is a great touch, reinforcing the support from afar feeling that the song has throughout. Perhaps the best part of the track is the one I heard first, the mini breakdown in the middle that is built up within seconds, great with the element of surprise. It’s one of those moments that feels like everything is in sync, from the quick cymbal taps to the fuzzy guitars to the thrum of the bass. This continues throughout the song, providing a great background to the endearingly mournful melody of the vocal line.
“Wanna Leave The Party” is a perfect mix of sweet and sad, a terrific example of the type of song I think everyone should be listening to during late night drives, an essential one to think to, to sing along to, or just to have next to you, a reassuring comfort that’s bound to last.
