"Let's Watch a Movie" by Uni Boys (Newer Music Friday)
The Uni Boys are masters of what I think of as “time androgyny”. To prove this, let’s do a little test. When you listen to the song linked above, “Let’s Watch a Movie”, when would you guess it had been released? Anywhere from the 70s to the 90s would be a great guess. If you watch the music video, you might shift your guess to whenever MTV was most popular, and rad videos like this were played 24/7. Alright, now for the grand reveal. “Let’s Watch a Movie” was in fact released September 15th, 2023!!! Aka TODAY (as of this writing). Crazy, right?
That’s one thing I love about the Uni Boys. Any one of their songs could be all the rage in at least six different decades, and will continue to be for many more decades to come! The quartet has hit their mark ever since they released their very first song, and I personally regard their debut album Do It All Next Week to be one of the best of all time, debut or otherwise!!
“Let’s Watch a Movie” is most certainly candy conversation heart music in my opinion. The song and it’s lyrics give me the feeling of accidentally receiving a stranger’s valentine. It’s like looking into something that makes you feel nostalgic and happy, the type of feeling you never want to go away!
“Let’s Watch a Movie” works fast at it’s listener, quickly becoming an ear worm that you won’t want to go away. I already know I’m going to be singing it under my breath for days to come. The chorus is especially perfect for this sneaky phenomenon, as it really only consists of the words “let’s watch a movie” — easy to remember!! However my personal favorite part is the chorus, where the backing vocals go from repeating the lead to “oos” and “aas”. I’m such a sucker for oo’s and aa’s!! Bonus if you can spot the (I’m assuming intentional) Beatles reference that plays for a split second during this part!
The Uni Boys have taken music and bent it to their will, and I believe the world is much better because of it. All their music videos are charmingly fun, but this one may have taken the cake. Please, everyone take note!!! Everyone needs more silly, campy music videos in their lives. Thank you for that, Uni Boys. “Let’s Watch a Movie” makes me ten times more excited than I already was (and believe me, I was very excited) for their new album Buy This Now to come out on Curation Records October 15th!
