I’m a pretty visual person when it comes to music. That feels pretty goofy to write, because of course music is auditory, not visual. But I’ve always had the type of mind that comes up with elaborate scenarios to certain songs, specific stories to explain a crescendo or particular lyric. It usually takes a couple listens for me to get this image just right, have the story go correctly. However, every once in a while I’ll hear a song that gives me an immediate vivid visual story, and boy do I love when that happens! It always feels like it was destined to be, and that track always gets stuck in my mind for that exact reason. That’s most certainly why I’m so darn fond of Boys Go to Jupiter’s new single “Lovers Always Lose”!
The tune starts off strong with an intro that sounds kind of like if Sheer Heart Attack era Queen merged with the Electric Light Orchestra of “Strange Magic”. It’s got that dramatic orchestral flair with a chord progression that’s matter of fact, concealing the sheer power of the song to come. I love the quality of the guitar here, muffled just enough to encourage relaxation while also staying sharp enough to carry the sound forward. The instruments merge perfectly with the vocals, pulling back in sync and crashing forward together in a way that makes it hit just that much more. As the song goes on, I gotta credit the drums for really bringing the house down. A perfect complement to the other elements around them, they’ll crash in just the right parts and add little bits of suspense here and there in a way that just makes me love the tune that much more!!! I also gotta give props to the vocals because MAN do they have a powerhouse on their side! It’s hard to find someone who can charm you with their head voice and blow you away with their chest voice, much less on the same darn song.
After a particularly satisfying belt just after the four minute mark, the band employs one of my absolute favorite musical flourishes, something I call a crashing wave (mostly because I don’t really know the actual terminology woops!!). It’s that moment where everything builds and builds, takes a sudden stop, only to come back a second later with more force than ever before. Any song that has that will always have a special place in my heart, and the skill with which its done on “Lovers Always Lose” means it gets an EXTRA special place in there! As if it couldn’t get any better, the tune has a crunchy chord ending, the type that makes your jaw drop seemingly on command, the type that I personally think is most effective in gaining replay returns!
Back to the visual part I talked about earlier. “Lovers Always Lose” gives me visions of some sort of fancy club show, like those old cabaret dinner sort of things. The intro instrumental accompanies the curtain drawing back, and there’s spotlights on the band. I like to imagine a very formal audience who, as the tune goes on, grows more and more enraptured with the song, totally losing themselves in the jam unfolding before them. Maybe my mind is onto something…. but I have a hunch it’s just my mind’s way of telling me I just really need to see this song live!
