Floating Philosophical Dreamscape
Heartbreak Feels Good in a Place Like This - veronicavon (Newer Music Friday)
Most of the time, hold music on the telephone is dreaded, since it almost certainly means you’re going to be stuck listening to the same generic melody for hours on end. However, there will occasionally be a song playing when you’re on hold that is a total jam, one that makes you forget that you’re doing any sort of business at all. To me, veronicavon’s new single “Heartbreak Feels Good In a Place Like This” is the ultimate example of this.
While there are many reasons why I’ve chosen to describe the song this way, I think the most outright is the vocal sound. The sweetly sad tone of the verses & chorus lends perfectly to a song like this, one where slightly echo-y, distorted vocals get the point across easily. This echo-y & distorted quality is something that looms over all elements of the song, making it the type that could fit in any situation comfortably. veronicavon’s blend is perfect on this song in particular, with every instrument locked in and perfectly in tune with the rest.
“Heartbreak Feels Good In a Place Like This” is the type of tune that welcomes you with open arms, one that you could interact with as if it were a physical object. It’s in what I think of as the modern version of the “easy-listening” category; a genre that is made up of lo-fi instrumentals, soft vocals, and slight existential dread, all wrapped up in a pretty pastel package. I think every telephone line should adopt this song as their hold music, because it’s a heck of a lot more fun to listen to a floating philosophical dreamscape than “The Girl from Ipanema” for the thousandth time!
