I find it really hard to answer the age old question of “Who’s your favorite Beatle?” When I was really stuck in my Fab Four phase, I guess I leaned towards John’s tunes the most. Then again, there were times where Paul’s sweet melodies would sway me. I always admired Ringo as a drummer, and continue to enjoy his entertaining presence on social media. As I’ve grown up though, I’ve begun to really appreciate George. Don’t get me wrong, I always did! But like many others before me, I’ve found myself wrapped in his music more than ever before. “Here Comes the Moon” struck me because of the name similarity to Harrison’s earlier hit, “Here Comes the Sun”, but I’d venture to say it shines even brighter than the latter.
It’s clear from the first few seconds that this one is an immediate winner. Glittering keyboards fade in slowly, easing the listener into a song that invokes the same relaxing feel as a lullaby. This gentleness continues with the introduction of Harrison’s vocals, a single track that sounds far away and organic. The verses are simple enough to sound like fragmented thoughts, something I think adds to the sincerity of the tune. It’s a reliable song as well, always returning to a repetitive chorus that’s easy to hum along to, but one that doesn’t quite end on a resolve until the guitar finishes it off. “Here Comes the Moon” has a really interesting balance, with a steady beat on the verses that then slips into a hop-skip time, keeping the energy up just enough.
The George Harrison of this song is the George Harrison I take a liking to most, the softer, appreciative side of him coming across through the sometimes intimidatingly mysterious demeanor. It’s certainly one I listen to over and over every once in a while just to remind myself to sit back and appreciate the beauty that’s all around.
