When a new year rolls along, I often look for signs that’ll tell me what type of year it’ll be. It can be as simple as sunshine signifying a good year or as complicated as high gas prices spelling disaster for the next twelve months. These little superstitions of mine are mostly a joke, but do hold a little bit of meaning to me. That’s why I am happy to say that due to their new single “My Golden Years” being released, The Lemon Twigs have displayed a very positive omen for 2024 in my book!
“My Golden Years” is like an ice cream sundae for the ears, with a sweetly retro sound that’s common of the Lemon Twigs since their debut. Jangly guitar combines with complicated background harmonies to create an optimistic sound for a tune whose lyrics go back and forth between hope and existentialism in the blink of an eye. Special emphasis on those background harmonies, because the amount of cluster chords created is off the charts awesome. The vocals take a little more of a rough turn towards the end, a cool departure from the more gentle leads featured on their last album Everything Harmony. All of this culminates in a wonderful “skip-a-beat” ending that leaves the listener ready to rewind to the beginning over and over again!
The Lemon Twigs have consistently been putting out spectacular music lately, and “My Golden Years” is no different. Having ended the year with their album on nearly everyone’s best of the year lists, I have no doubt that whatever “My Golden Years” is leading up to will repeat the cycle once again!
