There’s a lot to be said for music that is truly minimalistic. While it’s great to have songs that attack your ears, that drown out anything and everything around you, I always find it really impressive when artists can draw you in with something a little simpler. Montclair’s newest single, “Coming to the Rescue”, is a perfect example of this, getting the point across and more with exactly the right balance.
The tune starts off with a bass line feature, something I feel I don’t hear enough of these days. In this situation it’s a particularly great decision, as the slow crawl of the repeated notes serves as a familiar grounding point once the vocals are added. They come in at a point where they are more than welcome — the words have a gentle, clear tone to them that are calm and comforting. The drums come in and out through this first section, measured moments where a cymbal is delicately tapped, stopped right where it needs to be. All of this creates a relaxing soundscape that also cleverly allows for the next part to really take your attention. It’s almost like the tune roars to life at the first chorus — like it’s waking up to really face the day head on. Every element combines in that moment, as though the last piece of the puzzle has finally been placed. I found the use of an electric guitar particularly cool, as while the song seems to firmly sit in an acoustic state for the first bit, the moments where the electricity comes in add the perfect jolt of energy.
“Coming to the Rescue” is a song like the wind on a hot day, a track that is a welcome escape from the rest of daily life. It’s almost jarring to think of how the lyrics differ from the general feel of the sound, but then again, the best songs are the ones that hide the unexpected in plain sight.
