I feel like I’ve been seeing a lot of Chappell Roan content recently. By that I mean that a lot of people I think are cool have been talking about her, and therefore I have come to the conclusion that she’s really cool. As if I needed any more justification, her new single “Good Luck Babe!” is a multicolored disco-y ethereal jam that encourages the listener to dance the night away just as much as it encourages them to sit in the dark and contemplate what she’s really getting at.
The tune starts off with a sound that I would consider very 80s — synthy keyboard combined with a steady drum beat create this really bright mood from the get go. I love this in contrast with Roan’s voice, which is deeply mournful and complex, thoughtful and heartbreaking and controlled all at the same time. She has some of the best vocals I’ve heard in a while, an expansive range that really strikes the jackpot on the high notes. She arguably sounds her most expressive on the phrases that are way up in the stratosphere, something that is real darn tough to do.
“Good Luck Babe!” is a song that really launches the listener into the sky only to bring reality up for them to land on. I can envision this one live, an experience that I am sure will no doubt feel incredibly cathartic. For now though, I personally think that the slow-down ending gives that same kind of feeling, a nice moment to reflect on the sheer impressiveness of the song as a whole. (And boy is it IMPRESSIVE!!)
