This semester I’ve begun hosting another radio show along with my regular one. This one takes place on Tuesdays, and it’s exclusively about new music. (How appropriate!) While I’ve been trying to switch it up every week, there’s always one constant — and that’s a band I refer to as “your favorite and mine”… Lunchbox! My very first New Music show I spun some tunes from their most recent (and darn terrific!) album Pop and Circumstance that came out last May. You can imagine how thrilled I was when they released “Evolver” the very next week… followed by the song of the hour for today, “Letter from Overend”. The latter of which has really captured my heart — and will no doubt do the same to anyone who’s lucky enough to hear it!
The nostalgic charm that they do best is kicked in right from the top of “Letter from Overend”. That’s something I’ve come to love about them — Lunchbox has such a genuine sound, one that comes right out and gives you a big smile no matter what. This one in particular has a really warm, sort of echoey sound. It almost feels like a dream, or that type of peaceful happiness that envelops you when you’re right between falling asleep and being awake. Much of this sound is supported by the sound of the vocals — they’re pushed further to the back of the mix, keeping that dreamy soft quality alive and well. There’s also a cool balance between certain instruments that really work here. The electric guitar is jangly and sharp, the drums steady and energetic. In contrast, the acoustic guitar provides a good base, the horns are quick and quiet, and the keyboard gives telegraph-esque punch chords every once in a while. All these layers are ingredients for a darn good recipe… and Lunchbox have perfectly baked a song filled with love in every bite!
Listening to “Letter from Overend”, it’s hard to believe that the song is over twenty years old. (This is where you go “over twenty years old??” and I go “yes!!!”) This track is one that has lived in hibernation for around twenty-three years now and is ready to emerge on Evolver, which is being reissued this April. While that’s just about a month away, I’m already certain that the world will be brighter the day Evolver hits the ears of Lunchbox lovers everywhere!
