It was an unseasonably warm day for February where I am, and that calls for a song with a summery sound. For me, that means a tune that is bright and expressive, yet also has a hint of intrigue & mystery to it to keep interest. Luckily, Novo Amor has delivered exactly this with the release of his new song “Same Day, Same Face”!
This song is a perfect example of the great divide that can occur between the musical side and the lyrical side of a release. The instrumental seems optimistic, with delicate strumming of an acoustic guitar layering over drums that crash softly like ocean waves on the sand. The lyrics stand in contrast to this, spinning a tale of regret and missed connection in its most raw and frustrating state. I really enjoy this contradiction, as it allows for the listener to hear what feels like two different versions of the song, an experience that depends on what aspect you find yourself needing most at the moment you hit play.
There actually is one moment in the song that I believe unites the two sides, allowing for the instruments to outwardly display the anguish that the lyrics imply. It’s about three quarters through, and you can tell when it starts, as the entrance of an electric guitar pops out even more than usual due to the acoustic feel of the rest of the song. The guitar holds a lot of emotion, shaky notes taking their time to really land their point, expressing so much without words. That’s the sign of a great musician there, a category in which Novo Amor certainly belongs. I’ll be looking forward to his new album Collapse List in April, especially if the tunes are along the same lines as this one.
