I’ve spent a fair amount of time recently trying to perfect the ultimate fountain drink to accompany a meal from the dining hall. This is my undercover operation, and I feel a little like Batman trying to save Gotham City if Batman means college girl and save Gotham City means make the best soda combo ever. This has taken time, but I think I’ve come to a conclusion. See, last week when I was sick I grabbed a cup, filled it with a little ice, some orange juice, and a little bit of Sprite on top. (I think I’ll call it a Spruce.) When I tell you that first sip was life changing?? I mean it. I felt instantly healed, and I knew I had found a winner. While I’m feelin’ pretty good this week, I can tell you that I felt healed all over again when I heard Joey Valence & Brae’s new single “John Cena”.
Funnily enough, “John Cena” has a lot of qualities similar to a Spruce. It’s got that fresh yet nostalgic feel that comes from the orange juice, while also bubbling over the top with straight fizz, just like Sprite. The song doesn’t hesitate to catch you, grabbing your attention right from the start with this totally sick sound that totally surrounds the listener. This is the stuff of legends, the type of music Miles Morales listens to while swinging through the city or Batman (me) listens to in the Batmobile (while I walk). The proclamation of “YOU ARE NOT READY” is perfect to preface the tune, because it goes every which way in the course of a little under three minutes. “John Cena” has this slightly dangerous, apprehensive feel in the instrumental that is just the best to juxtapose with their awesomely ridiculous rhymes. I mean seriously. This song is packed with more pop culture references than a Reddit forum about pop culture references. Mario Kart, Ben 10, Han Solo all get a shoutout. Do you really need anymore to convince you to press play now?
With “John Cena”, JVB have proved themselves yet again to be masters of their style. They have genuine fun on their tracks while also creating something that is seriously rad, and that’s really something special. And you know what? It is Friday…go make yourself a Spruce and put on “John Cena” for a truly wild night you won’t regret.
