Sweet Flower in the Summertime
Small Towns In New Zealand - The Doublejumps (Newer Music Friday)
I can’t tell you how excited I was to find (albeit a little late) that the Doublejumps had released a new single! You may remember them from back in the early days of Ear Bites, when I reviewed their terrific debut Asleep at Lunchtime that came out last September. After listening to this tune over and over (and over and over) again, I’m happy to report that the Doublejumps are back and just as beautifully shining as ever with “Small Towns in New Zealand”!
I was just reflecting last week on my love of the brush snare sound, and so this one was an instant winner with that aspect alone. Its the perfect complement to the relaxed feel of the song, a constant that is there through the entirety. Their signature brand of warped, dreamy sounding vocals also achieves this, especially when the subtle high harmony is added on top. They have a tone to them that makes it sound like this tune has been sung a million times, a sureness to the melody that makes it reliable. They are gentle above the instrumental, nearly at some sort of sung whisper. To bring the chorus/title back so often makes this song feel familiar and warm, adjectives that also accurately describe the Doublejumps’ discography.
There’s a level of care put into “Small Towns in New Zealand” that is evident in the soft way it presents itself, something that I really admire about this band. With them, I feel like the love shows itself in every song they produce, blooming like a sweet flower in the summertime. I have no doubt this quality will continue with their forthcoming album Goodbye Reflection!!
