When I think about my future life, my mind always drifts to dinner parties. To me, having friends over for a homemade meal to talk into the night has always seemed like something to look forward to. However, when I think of these distant gatherings, my mind doesn’t think about who will sit at my table, or what we’ll eat. Instead, I always seem to dwell on the soundtrack. For years I’ve only had one collection of tunes in mind — Stereolab’s Dots and Loops. However, with the release of Liana Flores’ debut album Flower of the soul, I’ve finally found the perfect pairing.
Liana Flores has the voice of a hummingbird, a pleasant mix of Norah Jones and Nick Drake with a softly delicate tone. I’ve chosen to focus on her song “Orange-coloured day” for this review, as I think it’s the perfect intro to her beautiful sound. I used to sing in a baroque choir, and some of the effects on her voice in this one take me back to that time, measured flips and careful notes seeming effortless on her part. The instrumental is subtle yet powerful, with steady acoustic guitar and an ambient piano coming together to create a duo that stands strong. I personally can never resist the sound of a brush on snare, so this tune had that in the bag for me right away. The song is whimsical, but has this small hint of mystery with the way each verse ends without quite resolving, something that certainly contributed to the sheer amount of times I’ve had this one on repeat.
With “Orange-coloured day”, Liana Flores has created a track that comes alive on its own, ready to spread love and joy wherever it goes. The rest of Flower of the soul follows this theme, and it is not one to be missed!
